Due to the flood almost all the roads were destroyed, and the reconstruction of the roads became a very important and urgent job.
The planters asked the officials to repair the roads. But there was not much help from the officials in the British India, although at Travencore side of the border had done all they could and fed thousands of refugees.Though they did the reconstruction work the length of the road from Mundakayam to Peermade increased by about 5 Kilometers (Currently length is around 22 Km).
The roads to Kumily was in a very bad condition But The Executive engineer of the PWD Madura District had not arrived see the roads destroyed ,but send an assistant who informed Neasrs Inman And Enimond that they intended to put on Hundred coolies when fine weather arrived. This showed the lack of interest of the officials .The planter went to Cumbum the next day to interview the executive Enginnner of Madura.
His purpose was to asertain what immediate steps are going to be taken .He also asked permission to undertake the reconstrction work by the district or arrange a contract. If none was possible he had plan to do the work themselves. It seemed that they had to do the work themselves. They had to collect between 200-300 cooliees and have an European Superviser managing the works.
At the end of Vandiperiyar the PWD cleared the road only due to the good deal of pressing from the Periyar planters. Mr ford of Chenkara Estate went down the ghaut the next Monday and found that the PWD had a small gang of coolies clearing a small path having the width of a footpath. This was not of much help to the planters. What they needed was an eight foot track along which they could drive Bullock carts to carry goods like rice and tea.The engineers who were in charge of the job never had any permission to make any alterations to the plan.
Mr Ford and Horrocks eventually proceded to Madura and saw the executive engineer of the PWD and told their immediate requirement was an Eight foot track.Though with certain amound of trouble they got what they needed. They returned to Gudalur with necessay orders to clear an eight foot track. While they reached Gudalur by the next day they found that contracts for clearing the roads were given out and work had started.Horrocks went to the working yard once in every week to keep track of the progress of the work.
Then
Soon by 1947 India got independence and the Europeans were forced to go back to Europe. The estates and the lands were bought by the rich people of India. The Kings also lost their power as India was a democratic country. Many people from the plains moved to these areas in search of jobs in the estates. As the climate of the area was pleasant many of the rich people started building cottages and houses here.Soon many Educational institutions were established for their children.Near peermade alone there are more than dozens of them. Many well-heeled ones established hotels and rest houses noting the increase in the amound of tourists arriving to peermade. The number of tribal people decreased to a very extend. They now live in small colonies near peermade.
Now the roads are good and motorable, so that you can easily reach Peermade which is on the way to thekkady and spend more than a week enjoying the cool climate and the scenary. Now when you come along to Peermade you can see a lot of rest houses, Educational Institutions, Meditation centers, Forests, Waterfalls, and many more interesting features. Reading the history of the place you may have understood about the evolution of the hills into excellent place to stay.Actually I feel the place should be called as ‘Land of Hotels‘ may be because i see the increase in the number of new stay houses day by day.
Every year a lot of tourists visit here. Many of them are Forigners comming from Europe and the US.You should be the next one.
