ABOUT PEERMADE (ALSO PIRMADU PIRUMADE PERUMADE)

Peermade is a small beautiful plantation town sorrounded by green tea hills blessed by the fragrance of Cardamom and spices, located in the Southrn Part of the Idukki District of Kerala along the Cardomom Hills of Western Ghats . It is a place well known for its possibilities of Tourism. The place got its name from the name of a Sufi saint called Peer Mohammad. The meaning of medu in Local langage is Hill and The meaning of the word peermade is "Hill of Peer".

Peermade is located in the Idukki district of Kerala. Idukki whick is a landlocked district having big and small mountainous is the most beautiful district of Kerala. Peermade is located at the southern part of the district. It is an ideal place to spend your holidays cheerfully.

How To Reach Peermade?

You can reach Kerala at the Nedumbasherry airport which is the nearest airport to Peermade. Then from there you can reach Peermade by a taxi or a local bus via Kottayam, Mundakayam, Peermade. The roads to the hill rises from the planes of Malanad (Meaning Land of hills). Mundakayam is the town along the foothills of the Highranges at Peermade and is famous for Rubber Plantatios. The plantations on either side of the road morfs from Rubber and paddy at the lowlands of Kottayam and Muvatupuzha to cardomom and tea at the highlands.

Which Are the Places On The Way To Peermade?

While travelling from Mundakayam to Peermade you can see the towns and villages down the valley. At night the lighting in the settlements of the villages make the entire hills lit as if the stars has decented down to the Earth.

You can come to Peermade from Munnar too which is a little more than a hundred kilometer away. Peermade is 35 kilometer away from the famous Periyar Tiger Reserve at Kumily. It is on the way to Kumily from Kottayam. Another smooth route is from Thodupuzha which is a major town of Idukki, along Moolamattom, Pullikkanam, Vagamon ( The Best Scenic Route ).  Once you come here, You can stay at any hotels or Stay homes, one I prefer is the one at Kuttikanam, the Misty Mountain resorts Kuttikkanam. Most of the hotels have local guides who will accompany during your visits or while making a  treck.

LIFE OF PEOPLE AT PEERMADE

Most of the people living at Peermade are estate workers earning their life from teh work in tea plantations. Most of them were brought here by Henry Baker (A missionary from Briton).

When Henry Baker first came to the hills these places were occupied by tribal settlements. The tribal include Uralis,Mannans Mala-Pandarams,Mala-Arayans.They lived in the thick dark forests. They lived and died in primitive simplicity in harmony with the wild. They had almost no contacts with the outside worlds. They came outside the jungle only for exchanging honey and cardamom they collected for salt and cloth. They lived in small groups and practiced migratory form of cultivation. They never settled in the same place for a long period of time. Each group had there own form of language and a Leader or king. They had there own way of living and had there own rituals and Practices. Most of them lived near small streams or water bodies.

Only a few have there own land. Most of them belong to the Sheduled Caste and Sheduled tribes. Most of them are hindus and the number of Muslims and Christians are less.Only ten percent of the people are unemployed.A few have government jobs. Many  people have migrated from planes for jobs as teaching manageing etc. Most of the poor live in small house in the estates.Even in a single house more than a dozen of families live in harmony. The number of tribal people became comparitively very less. Now most of tham are consendrated in the foothills near Periyar river at Plakkthadam and Near Kattapana.

NATURAL BEAUTY IN PLENTY

Peermade is rich in Natural Beauty. A few spots which can make a good trip to you are......

A BIT OF HISTORY

Before I tell about the assets and liabilities of the place let me give you a short description about the history of the place. Archeologists have found that people have been living here even during the very ancient times. It was found that the hills were once colonized by Neolithic people.Though there are not many written records for this, traces of their cultural remains which were left, can still be seen often along the hills, overlooking Periyar river. Many of their stone coffins can be seen near Vandiperiyar, Many were found at Munnar too.

Written records about the history of the places tells the story of about a little more than a hundred years. It says about the rule of the local Kings and the British and the evolution of tes Plantations from Dense Forests ruled by Tigers and Elephants.
