RAMAKKALMEDU

INDIA>KERALA>IDUKKI>KATTAPANA>RAMAKKALMEDU (GPS 9.82,77.24)

28-Dec-2008

Ramakkalmedu is a hill station and a hamlet in Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located about 15 km from Nedumkandom on the Munnar-Thekkady route. It provides a panoramic view of Tamil Nadu villages and towns. Abundant in wind, Ramakkalmedu is the second place in Kerala where a wind energy farm is installed. Currently at about 2.5 MW, there is plan to upgrade it to 12.5 MW which will make it the largest wind farm in Kerala.

Ramakkalmedu View Point Kerala

We started from Thovala Village (A Spot near Kattapana, where i stayed GPS:9.79,77.12) by 10 AM, We means 3 of Us, Me Myself, My friend Lijo Devesya, and His Cosign from Thovala. We followed an Estate walk road and finally reached Puliyammala (GPS :9.80,77.16), a place eight Kilometers  away from Kattapana  (A High Ragne Town of Idukki District GPS :9.75,77.11).  At Puliyammala , there were 4 roads. One to Kattapana,  Another one to Kumily (A famous Town very near to Thekkady),  One to Nedumkandam and Another to Thukkupalam (A town to the east of Kattapana on the Way to Ramakkalmedu) and Ramakkalmedu  (Refer Map for Details). The Spot Ramakkalmedu is About 17 Kms from Puliyammala.

We waited for  a long time at Puliyammala  to get a bus to Thukkupalam.  At last, we got a share Auto and by that we moved  to Thukkupalam and the charge was just 7 Rs. From Thookkupalam (A Place on the way to Ramakkalmedu GPS 9.81,77.19), a good town, there were plenty of shuttle jeeps  to Ramakkalmedu. There were Internet  Cafes and Hotels at Thukkupalam. We got on into such a jeep and continued our journey. The jeep was jam packed with local passengers and the Crazy driver was driving so fast along the narrow road. Finally we reached a junction very near to Ramakkalmedu View point, where we got out of the Jeep, and the jeep continues its Trip along a road to the right. There were a few Ice cream Parlors and Tea Shops here.

Ramakkalmedu View Point Kerala

From there, we had to walk about one kilometer to reach the Ramakkalmedu View point. It was awesome. The most amazing thing there was a very high rock, with a 300 meter high ridge facing east. We had a panoramic view of the Deccan plateau, and the Plantations of Tamilnadu.

A Human being will look like an Ant on top of the big rock. See the photo at the right to get an idea of the size of the rock. Many has fallen down from the top , killing themselves.

It all happens when it is misty, you will not be able t have an idea of the deep trench and will invite Accidents.

Ramakkalmedu View Point Kerala

There were windmills all around the place which were rotating its wings, except a few.The windmills project was a new one, Undertaken by the Government of Kerala. Ramakkalmedu is an ideal spot for such projects. The total capacity is 12.5 MW. There are a lot of Windmills In Tamilnadu and Karnataka (Udumulpeta and Chitradurga).
