HOW TO REACH SANCHI

Sanchi is easily accessible from All cities of India. I decided to goto Sanchi while I was at Delhi. There were many trains to Sanchi from Delhi. Almost al trains going to South India from Delhi Passes along Sanchi. Even though there is a railway station at Sanchi, the trains rarely Halt there. The nearest halt is Bhopal (The Capital of Madhya Pradesh) and I reached here Early morning. From here Sanchi is just an hour drive. The first Bus from Bhopal to Sanchi was at 5 AM. The bus station was about a kilometer far from Railway station (Scroll Down to See map to get an Idea of Bhopal City).

Thick mist at Sanchy, Early Morning.

It took almost 45 Mins to reach Sanchi fom Bhopal. The bus stop was not that noticeable and looked like a 4 Roads junction. Here you have very few restaurants and Shops. The Sanchi town is towards the left side about a kilometer away and the Sanchi hill is towards your Right side about a kilometer far.

I reached Sanchi early morning by around 6 AM and I was the first to enter the Gate. The scenic around was Excellent. I did not feel like going to the next destination, but Unfortunately I had only one day to spend here and I had to reach Agra the The Next Day. After my Stupa visit I got a rented bicycle from the Shop nearby (2.5 Rs Per Hour  / 20 Per Day) and moved around Snchi and Udayagiri Caves

The Stupa of Sanchi

THE STUPAS

Sanchi is famous for outstanding specimen of Buddhist art and architecture, belonging to the period between the third century BC and the twelfth century AD. The most important of all the Sanchi monuments is the Sanchi Stupa. Stupas are large hemispherical domes, containing a central chamber, in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the best preserved early stupas in central India. The Sanchi Stupa is surrounded by a railing with four carved gateways facing all the four directions.

When the British came to India, this stupa was quite dilapidated. Buddhism had been virtually wiped out in its country of origin by then. The archaeological Survey of India did a beautiful restoration job. One of the most interesting features of all the sculpture here is the lack of images of the Buddha in human form. He is represented symbolically by a Wheel, or Footprints, or Throne.

Go around and See All the Stupas. See the Map Above To See the Location of Stupas.
